Mill River Recluse Darcie Chan
It is not often that one can purchase a true masterpiece for only $.99. The Mill River Recluse provides such a rare opportunity. Based on the description alone, I was skeptical that I would enjoy this book, but wanted to understand why over 650,000 people had already read it to largely great acclaim. Quickly one is pulled into the engaging story and the writing is truly masterful. The author has a deep and insightful understanding of the complexities of human character and emotions and effectively paints rich portraits of the principal actors' thoughts, flaws, strengths, weaknesses and fears. Unexpected and intriguing plot twists and turns keep the story interesting and flowing. This book is a moving, carefully crafted gem that deserves all the accolades it has garnered and the accompanying success that it has achieved.

This book was better than it sounded, and I thought it sounded great. Very well-written, a pleasure to read. I enjoyed the characters and the story very much. Thought-provoking and moving - and much more polished than more seasoned authors I have read. Recommended.
BalasHapusI have to commend the author on presenting such a sensitive view of agoraphobia. As a sufferer it is awesome to see that there are people out there who do understand. Even family has a hard time with this one. Many of us don't show the severity, but it is an awful disorder. It is a fight everyday to be able to keep going. Mary found her way to deal with it and still be social in her own way. Today, we have internet which helps a great deal to be able to stay in touch. This book was wonderfully insightful and a real surprise to read. Thank you so much for an awesome story about a real problem.
BalasHapusI just finished reading the Mill River Recluse and was so sorry it ended, and even felt worse when I realized this is the only book by the author. This is definitely a love story, not in the typical sense as in a romance, but of human compassion (plus a little romance sprinkled in along the way). The book was easy to read, well written, and compelling. In a setting including WWII era, the marble business, and raising and training Morgan horses, the story was full of such rich flavor of the people and times. I look forward to more by this author in the future.
BalasHapusAs stated, I live in Rutland, Vt. only 3-4 miles from Mill River (in Clarendon, Vt.). Mrs. Chan was very good with her research of this area (as I understand she has never been here) -- the towns near Rutland, the Marble industry and even the people were spot on. I thoroughly enjoyed this story. She has the knack of not losing the storyline and keeping her characters real. This was one of the best 99 cents I have spent and am looking forward to more of her work.
BalasHapus"Mill River Recluse" is an amazing read and what a bargain at 99 cents! I know I'll read this one again because of the interesting characters and a great story that had me hooked from the first page. I agree with another reviewer in that it can't be pigeon holed into one genre. There is mystery, romance, crime and a bit of humor all rolled into one. You won't be disappointed except that it has a last page. I couldn't put it down but I didn't want to reach the end either!
BalasHapusI wish the book was in print so more people could have access to it.
Having been loaned a Kindle from a friend, I immediately went in search of books that were inexpensive. I stumbled on The Mill River Recluse and the reviews were what made me really want to read this book. Having never written a review before, when I completed this book I felt I HAD to write a review. I was so wonderfully surprised to the depth of characters, storylines and twists and turns along the way. I stayed up all night just to finish it!! I found myself chuckling at times and caught myself off guard with tears rolling down my face. You became part of Mill River and its community almost from the first page. I really didn't want the story to end.
BalasHapusIf you have only one chance to read a good Kindle book - this is by far the one! I enjoyed it so much, that when I someday purchase my own Kindle, I will be adding (and most likely reading) this book again....one I DEFINATELY want to add to a 'forever' collection!
I will search out any further books by Darcie Chan in a heartbeat!! Well done!!! Enjoy this read!!!
Maeve Binchy fans, pay attention: Darcie Chan is your stateside solution. Chan's portrait of small-town life in Vermont evokes the lovable, quirky characters of _Circle of Friends_ or _Tara Road_, but with a style and spirit all her own.
BalasHapusThe reader settles into the ebb and flow of life in Chan's Mill River easily, even as the author toggles between past events and the present. While Chan moves the story along skillfully, the greatest strength of _The Mill River Recluse_ is its characters. Chan's local citizens (both past and present) are lovingly drawn and immediately recognizable. As the plot unfolds, you come to know and understand her heroes (villains, too) in a most natural way.
A feel-good story that never turns saccharine, _The Mill River Recluse_ will not disappoint. Indeed, as the last paragraphs close, the reader wants nothing more than just to spend a few more pages in Chan's Mill River.
WOW...amazing read. I literally could not think of anything else until I finished the book, and was really sad when I saw that the author has not published anything else YET. Please hurry up and write something new...what an amazing first book.
BalasHapusAs the other reviewers have said...a series of unfortunate events turn a shy girl into a recluse. Being housebound for the past 22 years due to a long term disease - I thought that the author did an amazing job of capturing the many aspects of what this is like. Her house overlooks the town and even though she does not meet the inhabitants she loves to hear about them. The book is part Mystery(why is she so scared of going out), part character study(it follows her life), there is a Romance, etc. There are so many elements to it...it is very difficult to pigeon-hole in any one category. Mostly it is tremendously moving. The characters are wonderful. I loved the town. It is so hard to describe this book...as there is so much to it. Touched me so much...I wish I could read more....I am so sad it is over.
BalasHapusThis book, was absolutely wonderful. I thought at times it was a tad predictable, but the way it was written, made this book a classic in my mind. I already imagine what an amazing movie this could be. The writing style was incredible. I would best describe this book like a fine car....in the beginning it catches your eye, then it starts to pick up speed, and then, it is just handling beautifully and fast and keeps your interest!! From the first chapter I felt like I was right in the tiny town. Great book.
