The book is good and got better the longer I have thought about it.

The Demonologist Novel Andrew Pyper

The Demonologist Novel Andrew Pyper

I'm pretty picky. I read several books a week. I have for many years. Of late I've been rereading some authors' works simply because of the lack of good books. While demonology is not something I'm interested in, I took a chance on this book in particular after reading the notes describing the story. One thing is for sure. I am downloading Milton's "Paradise Lost" to reread. The Milton excerpts this writer added remind me of how beautiful that poet's verse is. But back to this book. I could not put it down. Finished it in one sitting. I won't add a spoiler alert but only say I wasn't prepared for the ending. In any way. I'm still not sure if I'm satisfied by it. But the story is engaging and immediate. This writer can bring differing environs alive vividly in a way few writers can. His handling of "horror" does not fall back on the all too common place knee jerk gore and shock factors. Therefore, the "horror" elements are truly disturbing. All of his characters are finely drawn. And so they draw you into the life of this story. Which is what all writers want. They want you to care what happens next. This writer has succeeded with this book. I think it could have been about anything and still been as good as it is. The demonology aspect will attract lots of readers. But I hope all will see this as simply a very well written book.

  1. Great story from a first time read of the author. One of the few stories with one story line verses multiple ones.

  2. Not my usual subject of interest but I learned a lot! One thing I learned was not to be afraid to learn about the dark stuff. It does exist!

  3. This is the first novel I have read by Andrew Pyper and it won't be the last. The main character is Dr. David Ullman a college professor whose major expertise is in literature specifically focusing on the demonic and supernatural. Dr. Ullman's marriage is in awful condition when he receives an odd but intriguing proposal to come to Europe and witness an incredible event and provide a professional assessment and evaluation of the phenomenon and be handsomely compensated. Dr. Ullman's daughter joins him on the trip and is taken and "possessed" by a demon. David must travel far and wide to save his daughter.

The plot is extremely well crafted and many of the clues come from Milton's "Paradise Lost" (no spoilers here).

This novel is terrific. I highly recommend it.

  5. A fascinating story - with characters that you can actually believe in. And the way the author tells the story is so much more than creepy. I truly loved it!
