Dusk Dangerous Duke Lords Vice

Dusk Dangerous Duke Lords Vice

A historical romance that will keep you on your toes! The fantastic antics of the two main characters, Hunter and Lady Grace, had me cracking up far more often than not. A five heart read for sure, and I am really looking forward to getting to know the rest of the Lords of Vice.

Top Shelf Story Telling

The Depot ebook

The Depot ebook

From the very first scene, this story pulled me in. A brutally attacked girl enters into a train station seeking help and sees a blur of time passing before her eyes in a surreal way. I loved it. So much better than saying, "And then she became a ghost...."

I'll admit that paranormal isn't my most favorite genre because so often it is sensational and gory, but DeSousa handles everything so tastefully--from the "ugly" bits to the romantic moments. Nothing caused me to flinch at what was on the page, and yet it had my heart pounding enough that I became jumpy while reading and actually screamed aloud when my son's unexpected appearance startled me. That's good writing!

In addition to building the right level of suspense, DeSousa builds good characters. We flip perspectives between two leads, and both feel authentic. We witness their perceptions of truth change, and we empathize with their needs.

Another thing I like about DeSousa's writing is that she chooses last lines well. Scenes often end with a little twist that makes you go, "Oh! That changes things!" It definitely makes you want to keep going.

I've read THE PITSTOP by DeSousa also, which I also enjoyed, but this piece is absolutely stellar!

The future of sex looks brighter thanks to Ms Gallop

Make Love Not Porn ebook

Make Love Not Porn ebook

I must admit when I finished reading the last page of this book I really wished there was more! I even started to read it again.

I come from a generation where it was a privilege to have a computer and the internet was accessible on a disc. Where the computer was located in the living room and no one had the freedom to look at "adult" content for fear of their parents catching them. I also come from a generation where we were lucky to have a "decent" sex education program. Even though I had learned the "basics" from school I was still left curious about sex, not having open minded parents to talk to I learned everything from friends, books and the pictures on porn boxes while I was working at my first job at a sex shop.

In Cindy Gallop's book, she goes into extensive detail on how our younger generations through lack of proper teaching, are being taught about sex through porn. She explains how it is effecting peoples sex lives, and intimacy in a huge way. She discusses her own personal experiences, and even uses examples of her fans and followers to show the effects it has had in many other people as well. Cindy points out all the myths behind the porn industry and gives you the truth about how REAL PEOPLE HAVE SEX. Sort of like a Myth Busters of Porn!

Her book has really opened my eyes and helped me realize why my partner and I behave in certain ways about sex. I encourage everyone to read it! Young, Old, Virgin or Sex kitten. It really is mind blowing.

Thank you Cindy for this Eye Opening and Fun read!

First, I just want to say that I'm a dedicated Amazon Prime customer. I order from Amazon all the time and most of the time I'm completely satisfied. I decided to buy myself a birthday present on Cyber Monday and they had a Peugeot watch worth $195 on sale for $58. I totally wanted this watch. Well, with my Prime account I had it in a couple of days (about 2 weeks before my birthday). A couple days later, I was riding on the Metro to work when I felt something loose in my glove. My ceramic watchband had lost the pin that held it to the watch face. I thought, well, there's a jeweller near where I work, I'll have them fix it. It shouldn't be difficult. No, they couldn't fix it. The pin in question was installed in the factory and that is the only way it could be replaced. I was disheartened. Well, I tentatively went to the Amazon website and checked out the replacement policy. All I had to do was basically ask. They would send me another one in 2 days and I would need to send my defective one within 30 days or they would charge me $58 again. Well, guess what arrived on my birthday. I'm not kidding. Love you Amazon!

Doody Digger Pooper Scooper

Doody Digger Pooper Scooper

This is thing is da bomb! I've been using a proper scooper that was a small shovel on a stick and a poop pan on a stick. They were short and didn't hold much, and they broke easily. I saw this and thought what the hell, surely this many people can't be wrong. This awesome tool only takes one hand, and is long enough to reach the ground without bending over. It's made out of resin, I think, so it's light but strong. And best of all is the pointed tip that allows for digging underneath watered-down piles. A word of caution for the eager: keep your technique slow and controlled. This may sound silly, but the weight of the load you are scooping is an important thing to consider when raising the tip to slide the load into the bag. See, if you score a small turd, it can easily become airborne as the cantilever action in your wrist gets accommodated to the weight of the rapidly filling bag. Luckily when I made this discovery the turd in question was dry and crumbling so it didn't leave a visible mark on my forehead. But I digress. Bottom line: you won't regret your purchase. Oh! And it works great for picking up pinecones too.

Warrant for Love ebook

Leeanne Curtis, her sister Nicky, and their friend Jade have one thing in common. They have rocky relationships with men. Lee is a pleaser, Nicky a shouter, and Jade a tough cookie, keeping men at arm's length, lest they break her heart.
Both Nicky and Jade, in spite of being the worst people to give advice, try to help Lee get rid of Richard, a smooth operator who has taken advantage of Lee's kind heart and depleted her bank account.
Hovering in the wings we have PC Paul Davis who has troubles of his own. After he arrests Lee for soliciting, Paul realizes his mistake, and although it's love at first sight for him, Lee wants no part of him. Paul's world is turned upside down as he tries to court Lee.
The easy folksy language used in this novel fits perfectly with the lives of the characters. Lee's son uses exactly the kind of lingo one would expect a teenager to use. In very few words we can glean that he wants to come across as macho but is really a very caring person.
Sheryl Browne works the relationships of all the characters in her novel skilfully. We are constantly exasperated and want to jump into the book to tell one character or another to smarten up and listen to the other person, to give them a chance. Bad timing, written into the book expertly, keeps the love situations of all three women at a frustration level, but Browne throws in a few surprises and resolves each of the relationships to bring the book to a satisfying close.

Where She Went Gayle Forman

Where She Went Gayle Forman

There are not enough adjectives to describe my love for this book. I don't know how it's possible but I believe I love this one even more than the first book, If I Stay.

Adam's life should be all he'd ever wanted. He's an insanely famous rocker who can have any girl he wants. His band is huge and they are about to leave on a world tour. He should be on top of the world. Instead, he finds himself distraught with nearly everything in his life. His live-in girlfriend is nice but it's like he knows she's not the one. But the one who was the one left him long ago.

This book is brilliant in every way. It's gripping, emotional, painful, healing. I savored every word on every page, marveling at the genius writing style of Gayle Forman. She has a gift for creating an unforgettable world so real that I never want to leave, even if it is bringing me to tears page after page.

There is so much I want to say about this book but I'm so afraid to spoil even one detail of this heartbreaking and amazing book that I'm going to just say this: I. Love. This. Book. If you were a fan of If I Stay, you seriously need to pick up this book today, or pre-order it. I cannot recommend it enough. It's simply breathtaking.

I still remember the first time I read this book. It was in English 11th grade and none of us wanted to read it. But it turned out to be one of my favorites. I recently bought this new edition, new dates and all (not a big deal to me), and fell in love with it all over again. Sure, it is dated in some ways but the imagination, the storytelling, the poetic writing are masterful. Only Bradbury could momentarily briefly bring summer to the winter lands using the exhaust from rocket engines.
My favorites are And the Moon Be Still as Bright, which still makes me sad about Spender and I was startled at how violent the one scene at breakfast, and the final story The Million Year Picnic, which is sad and wonderful. But there are no weak stories in this book, not to me. It reminds me why I love to read. But it helps to have Bradbury's words. They are a joy to read.

In The Forest of Hands and Teeth we follow Mary and her friends as they escape their village after the fence keeping the Unconsecrated (zombies) out falls. In Dead Tossed Waves, Mary's 'daughter' Gabry, also has to fight her way through the Forest in search of the family she lost... and never knew she had.

The end of Dead Tossed Waves leaves off with Gabry and Catcher making their way to the Dark City to find Annah- Gabry's long lost twin sister. This is where The Dark and Hollow Places begins...

Carrie Ryan wastes NO TIME dragging us into the dark desperation that has become everyday life since the Return (when the dead started rising instead of staying dead). Annah, having spent three years alone since Elias left her to join the Recruiters, has decided to leave the Dark City and return 'home' to her village inside the Forest of Hands and Teeth.

Annah is crossing the bridge that will take her out of the Dark City, when she SEES Gabry for the first time since they were children... when she and Elias had left Gabry alone, crying and bleeding in the middle of the Forest. Annah tried to get to her sister, but she's on the bridge going the opposite direction... taking her INTO the Dark City.

Annah learned long ago not to draw the attention of the Recruiters, but she tries to reach her anyway. She fails... She is attacked by the Unconsecrated, by the Recruiters, by men who are evil by nature and then she meets Catcher.

I have to say... I LOVED this book. I read it in the span of a day, and while I wasn't a HUGE fan of the first two Forest of Hands and Teeth books- I could NOT put The Dark and Hollow Places down! Carrie Ryan's writing is hard to rival- period. catcher and Annah will remain one of my favorite couples in YA fiction forever! This is an unbelievably fabulous read, and an AWESOME end to the series!

For Love Ireland Judy Leslie

For Love Ireland Judy Leslie

If you're looking for a good story with good plot, intrigue, and tangible characters, you should read For the Love of Ireland. Based in fact, this historical fiction novel brings to life the plight of the Irish in the late 1880's and those who fought for the freedom of Ireland in America and the British Isles; and, the lengths to which some people will go to get what they want.

The story and characters are well-developed. I felt as if I was there, right along-side Margaret Sullivan as she travels to Ireland and learns first-hand about the fight for Irish independence, the agendas of those behind the fight (both as a group - Clan na Gael - and as individuals), and how much her husband contributes to the cause. It's a real eye-opener for Margaret when she realizes her level of participation in the fight, the impact it has on others, and the law of unintended consequences.

The story is engrossing and moves quickly. You won't be skimming.

Excellent speculative fiction for adults

No Return Zachary Jernigan

No Return Zachary Jernigan

First, let me specify that this is a novel for adult readers! Okay, now that we all have our big boy pants on the reviewing shall commence! Zachary has created a dark and gritty fantasy world that will tickle Sci-Fi and Fantasy fans alike!

The books premise is refreshingly unique. The two warring factions, the Adrashi and the Anadrashi, garb their champions in suits that enhance the abilities of their wearers. They then partake in battles to prove the superiority of their ideologies. However, the flaws of these teachings become evident to the protagonist, Vedas. We are then able to watch him as he grows from a mere drone to his cause into a fully fleshed out free thinking person.

The development of the characters was amazing! Their thoughts are made accessible throughout the book. I greatly enjoyed getting to not only view their growth, but to experience it with them as it formulated from within. This allowed me to easily invest into the characters and care for them on their journey across Jeroun.

In my opinion, this novel is more of a philosophical treat than a gladiatorial-style action story. However, the story still possessed more than enough brutal fights to remind me that Jeroun was a dangerous and enjoyable world to explore. The combat is handled marvelously, embracing quick bone crushing brutality rather than drawn out action sequences that seem to go nowhere. Often times in books I find fights scenes are unnecessarily prolonged. Zachary opts instead to show a more realistic approach in the pacing of fights that I came to appreciate.

The only part of this book that I struggled to get through was the highly sexualized nature of many of the characters within this world. The scenes are written well and at times are necessary for the development of a character, but I found the sheer number of scenes portraying their perverse nature to be jarring from the overall story narrative. This was hardly a deal breaker; it just seemed unneeded at times.

Overall, this is a great read! It was evident the book left a significant impression on me as I found myself wanting to discuss it with people in my workplace but unable to for fear of spoiling, and there's a special place in hell for those who spoil a good book. The world is impressively full and rich with color and texture. The steady pacing made it read smoothly. Lastly, the ending left me satisfied yet also longing for the stories continuation. I'll be impatiently waiting for book two.

4.5 Stars!!!

Looking Rose Poker Posse ebook

Looking Rose Poker Posse ebook

Top Pick 4.5 / 5 Stars
Reviewed by Terri

I have been really looking forward to this book and this series. The premise is awesome. A group of moms have decided to go looking for men for their spinster daughters at a local BDSM club. Unknown to them, their daughter have also gone there looking. And, let the fun begin. Not only is there some fantastic sex and romance but there are some definite moments of humor. Yet, all humor aside, this book takes on some very complex and interesting issues for body image to growing up gay in a small southern town. It also explores the love of family and good friends.

I really enjoyed this story but wish there were certain elements that were explored in more depth, such as Rose's mother and her secret love who happens to be Rose's biological father that she never knew about.

A Nice, Packed Edition from Criterion

Traffic

Traffic

5.0 out of 5 stars

Masterpiece for the New Millenium, June 14, 2001

By A Customer

In a single sentence, Traffic is one of the most intelligent, intruiging, and invloving movies I have seen in a long time. The performances are excellent by both the new and established actors. Benicio Del Toro gives one of the most honest performances I have ever seen as a mexican police officer teetering between the corruption around him and his love for his country. Michael Douglas in amazingly human in his portrayal of the country's new drug czar, and Catherine Zeta Jones makes us sympathize with the wife of an imprisioned drug dealer.

Director Steven Soderbergh weaves a brilliant tapestry with the stories of these four characters. Traffic is more like four seperate movies that move together, as well as in and out of each other, yet you never lose track of what is happening in each story. The handheld-style filming brings you into the movie and it's almost as if you are standing there with the characters filming their actions.

The movie is neither depressing nor uplifting, and does not seem to want to convey any opinion the writer or director has about drugs. Instead it seems to simply present views the different characters have, pockets of hope in a sea of hoplesness that is the drug war today.

DVD notes: The production notes are interesting and the Behind-The-Scenes featurette gives a good picture of the filmakers. Overall extras: 3.5/5

The Woman Inside

The Woman Upstairs Claire Messud

The Woman Upstairs Claire Messud

I'm a woman artist. And being one found that "The Woman Upstairs" by Claire Messud really nails what it is to be a woman artist. And portrays the art world and the people in it pretty spot on.

The inner frustrations, the dreams and aspirations, fitting into a male dominated art world and having your work taken seriously. How people view the woman artist, what they think she is, and what they think she thinks she is.

Art. It sounds so simple. Yet, it is so complicated and multifaceted. For being a woman and a mother and a teacher and an artist. Art is the most important thing yet society and the world seem to want the woman to put it last on her list of things to accomplish.

I totally got Nora. There was a lot of my time spent typing quotes and little snippets from the book to my female artist friends in Social Media sites and emails while reading this book. I had to keep sharing little gems from it with my creative lady friends. They are all looking forward to buying this book if they haven't already.

I stayed up half the night to finish Wings of Glass, because I could not put it down. Gina Holmes does a wonderful job drawing you into the story and portraying the emotions of the main character, Penny. The story is unique in that it is written in the form of a letter from Penny to her son, Manny.

Penny at the age of 17 runs off to elope with the summer hired hand. Like many young girls, Penny is struggling with a lack of male affection. Her father is rather strict and harsh, so she takes the first opportunity of someone offering a different path. But Penny's new husband has anger issues and takes them out on Penny both physically and emotionally. Because of an accident at work Penny's husband Trent becomes blind thus creating an opportunity for her to escape the isolation she has been forced to endure for the last seven years. After finding a job, Penny is able to make a couple of friends who urge her down a path of victory and healing. This is not only a story about abuse, but also of friendship and love.

I was so involved with Penny's story, I read the book from start to finish. You will not be disappointed by Wings of Glass.

Wow

Fifty Shades Grey Book Trilogy

Fifty Shades Grey Book Trilogy

This is not Great Expectations. It's not a brilliant book but it's damn fun. I had every intention of sneering at the story because it's such a pop phenomena. I had just finished a serious book and wanted something light and silly and I had DLd this a while back out of curiosity.

I thought FSOG was going to be BDSM lite wrapped around a silly romance with lots of inaccurate and misguided sadomasochistic sex.

Not so. I am finding it a sweet little love story. And the kink is well done too. Yes, Ana can be quite annoying with internal dialogues with alter egos and goddesses and much pursing and posturing and biting of lips. She is prone to gushing and huffing and puffing - but so is he, Christian. He is constantly devouring her with his smoldering liquid gazes, so the field is pretty level.

He pushes her. She pushes back. etc etc.

What this book is about is two youngsters falling in love. And I liked it.

In the real world lately there's a lot of seriously screwy fantasy floating around, passing itself off as a sexy way to "have a relationship".

Power imbalance is not a healthy basis for any sort of relationship but in this crazy world, it's become a very serious and desirable sexual fantasy.

However, in real BDSM relationships, there has to be MUCH talk and honesty and give and take where BOTH negotiate what they want - it might be "about" dominance and submission, but submissives and dominants negotiate everything. Nobody orders anyone around who hasn't consented to being "ordered around". That's the way it is.

What I like so much is this story is about two rather nice people naively exploring who they are, what they want and how each of them can love the other, doing it the way young people will - with lots of blind faith and enviable energy. Except kink is means they use to find each other - not the end.

Yes, they're pretty, he's rich, she's a young adult who starts out a virgin (probably one of about ten in the free world) who is instantly capable of multiple climaxes at the bat of an eye. He has a perpetual erection for her.

In the midst of all this perfection, he buys her expensive gifts and first class plane tickets and they drink the nicest wines, eat well, he has a fabu apartment and she gets an Audi, etc etc. VERY fluffy - perfect couple with perfect skin in a fantasy scenario in the midst of a complicated love negotiation.

To my eyes what makes this very interesting is that it's about the two of them playing with and giving up power to one another while being quite aware they're doing it, both of them are again and again taken by surprise by their emotions and what they're willing to give to one another because they're falling in love, the ante is upped constantly and there are a lot of emotional risks for each. And in those kinds of details lies the interest as good romances will do.

Christian is not "THE GREAT DOMINANT" (heaven save us from those leather wearing heavyweights) and she's not Anne Rice's "Beauty" (ditto on that as well), blithely falling, willynilly into all kinds of heavy duty SM scenarios without any adverse emotional residue or physical trauma to invade the endless kinky little fantasy.

Every step of Ana's and Christian's negotiating and posturing is considered by the author who apparently knows a lot more about kink than many have given her credit for. And in that I found it convincing in some ways and a good read. The sex is definitely a bit hard core without being pornographic, at least to me - descriptive but never creepy.

I like this book. It's a fast read. It's sort of a double spaced big typeface novella so there's not a whole lot to it. GREAT BEACH READING - which can be devoured by one's own smoldering eyes in an afternoon.

Content wise though, it's far more potent than you might think. He ISN'T all powerful and she isn't a victim.

In the end he's a guy (who pushes in very interesting and challenging ways) and she's a girl (who's smart enough to push back just as hard if not harder).

I think I'll like the sequels.

Fantastic Incredible Beautiful Age of Orphans

The Age of Orphans ebook

The Age of Orphans ebook

The Age of Orphans is a no-holds barred war story. It offers an intriguing, powerful and tragic storyline from start to finish. The densed plot reflects battlefronts with an almost atmospheric flavour.

In The Age of Orphans, the reader is treated to shocking disclosures of barbaric violence attributed to torture of rebel fighters and the odd sexual encounter, through mismatched opportunity between hero and villian. In the same breath, Khadivi's brilliant literary genius, is careful to caress ruffled feathers and brutal scenes, using an assortment of poignant and tangy reflections. Her refined and elegant vocabulary that lies very much in the tone of Rushdie's The Enchantress of Florence, is beguiling to say the least.

Briefly, the crux of the plot is that it starts off being set, in the early turn of the 20th century, before the Shah of Persia, came into power. It will eventually work its way down into modernity. Reza, a little Kurdish boy, living with his father's rebel and misplaced tribe, high up in the Zagros (Persian) Mountains, idolises his Maman (mother), while all around him, brave men prepare to take on the army. The Kurds want their own land and country. Unaware, Reza appears tender, gentle and sensitive...a kind, pensive little boy who takes delight in heaping affection upon his mother, by feeding at her breasts, every chance he gets. However, he is prepared for early manhood by his father and neighbouring men. They take him into the caves and through a painful ritual, announce his manhood.

Reza suffers the first injustice at being separated from his Maman. 'A man no longer suckles at his mother's breasts.' He is warned about this with fury by an irate, rude father...often callous to his son's demands. To Reza's red-faced candour and very much a misfit in his own society, he is laughed at by the others and teased by the girls. He and his mother meet in a secret place, so that Reza may still feed on her milk. This secret tryst is soon discovered by the menfolk. They laugh out loud and make his maman go insane. Being unofficially mad, she takes to hovering about in an isolated garden. Reza is eventually taken into battle with his father, where ambitious plans fail dismally in an army massacre. Reza watches horrified, at the series of brutal murders and at the sight of his own father, being stabbed and kicked to death. I felt that the foundation of the novel actually began here.

Reza is eventually adopted by an insensitive but amused army, together with other orphaned little boys who all vye for favour, clinging to rivalry as a broad excuse. They soon begin their training as soldiers. Eventually, Reza rises into a powerful rank and with a stern, po-faced conjecture but terribly guilty conscience at the same time, fights against his own people. The Kurds naturally see him as a traitor but are too afraid of his power. However, one cruel farmer, takes actions into his own hands that will change Reza's destiny in a shocking, unexpected way. By now, our protagonist has properly hardened his heart and turned appropriately cold and distant, towards everyone in general. He contains all the attributes of an actor, heroic, handsome, brooding and charismatic.

Reza marries a beautiful Persian woman, with a mind of her own. She hates the Kurds and brings their children up to reflect the same misgivings. Materialistic and selfish, she takes revenge on Reza, whom she feels has short-changed her with a failed promise of glitzy wealth and status. Reza's wife sleeps with other men in earnest and along the way, earns herself a scarlet reputation.

Not that Reza minds of course.

As the years flee and we now find ourselves in modern-day Iran, we also observe an increasingly brooding Reza. Here is a weary man who carries a heavy cross; one who feels an immense sadness at having betrayed the Kurds. He has never got over missing and losing his mother and through a chained series of events, this is naturally reflected in Reza's initial experience with women.

The novel grows with sharp strength as the plot progresses through Khadivi's easy ability, that allows her to reveal the often hidden but affectionate heart of Reza. Slowly but surely, despite all his brutalities, the reader learns to love him. Khadivi avoids the usual sentiment associated with heartbreaking novels, that trace a deep sense of emotion.

She does this by seeming to write with a strong masculine hand and one suspects that she rides through her own played out brutal scenes, with nary the blink of an eyelid. Her story is devoid of emotion and sentiment is played out through narration. One expects a thick maze of skilled literary metaphors and complex wordplay, poetic in rhythm and structure, and all of which are honed beautifully by Khadivi herself. A brilliant novel, complex in personality and certainly, not your everyday easy-to-devour read.

A wonderful surprise & a perfect read for the winter months

Shiver Wolves Mercy Maggie Stiefvater

Shiver Wolves Mercy Maggie Stiefvater

'I didn't think I belonged here in her world, a boy stuck between two lives, dragging the dangers of the wolves with me, but when she said my name, waiting for me to follow, I knew I'd do anything to stay with her.'

There was something incredibly beautiful about Maggie Stiefvater's writing style... I found myself completely mesmerized. I definitely have a soft spot in my heart for beautifully written stories that fill me with a deep longing... and this one definitely did it. Sam and Grace's passion was palpable and heartbreaking. These too definitely had a connection that lacked an easy explanation; it just was.

As this is the first time I've read Shiver, I've heard opinions about this book from every end of the spectrum. The one that stuck out the most for me was that it was 'Twilight' rewritten if Bella were to have went with Jacob instead of Edward. Being that I have now personally read 'Shiver' and can formulate my own opinion I can see some slight similarities but there was a depth to the characters and the story itself that was sorely lacking in Twilight... plus the writing itself was on a completely different level.

Incredibly enjoyable, I loved every minute of it. I can't help but wonder though what the next installment will bring. If I didn't know that the second (and third) book was already released I would have been completely content with how this story ended. I suppose we shall see. :)

'I closed my eyes. For a brief moment I wished with all my heart that he was just a normal boy, so that I could storm away with my pride and indignation. But he wasn't. He was as fragile as a butterfly in autumn, waiting to be destroyed by the first frost.'

The book is good and got better the longer I have thought about it.

The Demonologist Novel Andrew Pyper

The Demonologist Novel Andrew Pyper

I'm pretty picky. I read several books a week. I have for many years. Of late I've been rereading some authors' works simply because of the lack of good books. While demonology is not something I'm interested in, I took a chance on this book in particular after reading the notes describing the story. One thing is for sure. I am downloading Milton's "Paradise Lost" to reread. The Milton excerpts this writer added remind me of how beautiful that poet's verse is. But back to this book. I could not put it down. Finished it in one sitting. I won't add a spoiler alert but only say I wasn't prepared for the ending. In any way. I'm still not sure if I'm satisfied by it. But the story is engaging and immediate. This writer can bring differing environs alive vividly in a way few writers can. His handling of "horror" does not fall back on the all too common place knee jerk gore and shock factors. Therefore, the "horror" elements are truly disturbing. All of his characters are finely drawn. And so they draw you into the life of this story. Which is what all writers want. They want you to care what happens next. This writer has succeeded with this book. I think it could have been about anything and still been as good as it is. The demonology aspect will attract lots of readers. But I hope all will see this as simply a very well written book.

Awesome Read!

The Elite ebook

The Elite ebook

Joseph Gordon-Levitt and writer/director Rian Johnson proved to be the perfect pair with 2005's BRICK. They're back together again in LOOPER, the story of a hitman who kills people sent back in time from the future. Joe's got a good life: drugs, babes, money. Of course, this lifestyle comes with a catch: one day, the person you're supposed to kill turns out to be your future self. This means you get to live out your remaining years (roughly 30) doing whatever you so desire. Of course, in Joe's case, things don't go according to plan; his future self escapes, on a mission to prevent the death of his wife, and now both Joes find themselves being pursued by ruthless killers.

LOOPER is stunning. Visually, it's a treat; the effects are impressive, the cinematography astounding. The action is slick and the dialogue is quick and intelligent, just what we'd expect from a Rian Johnson script. Perhaps the biggest surprise here (well, for non-Johnson fans, at least) is the caliber of acting. The supporting cast is impressive: Emily Blunt, Noah Segan, Garrett Dillahunt, and child actor Pierce Gagnon all shine, while Jeff Daniels and Paul Dano are especially memorable. Bruce Willis brings gravitas to the role of future Joe; he doesn't say much, but as with his best performances, he's able to convey quite a lot with his piercing gaze. Older Joe is a complex character, and Willis is able to play his single-minded obsession to commit atrocious deeds for sympathetic reasons.

But this is Gordon-Levitt's film. Sure, he has prosthetics to make him resemble Willis; but more to the point, much as Josh Brolin did a la Tommy Lee Jones for MEN IN BLACK 3, Gordon-Levitt has studied Willis's mannerisms and voice, coming off as a truly convincing younger version of the actor. And yet, the role isn't mere imitation; Gordon-Levitt proves why he's considered one of the best rising actors out there right now, bringing a haunting sense of pathos (not to mention cojones) to his role. Thanks to his performance, and Rian Johnson's script, LOOPER comes off as one of the most unique, memorable science fiction/action films in years. It'll go down as a cult classic, and maybe one day, simply a classic example of the genre.

Red aqua diver

Stuhrling Original 395 33TT11 Aquadiver Professional

As I sat in my movie seat willfully ignoring the four other people, I imagined I had the whole theater to myself. I was looking forward to seeing a movie that was based on my Dad's favorite monster, the Wolfman. I had no idea what to expect and then The Wolfman started and once the howling and screaming began, this movie didn't let up until the end.
I loved the gothic setting with the beautiful gloomy and dreary atmosphere of the funeral that invoke feelings of past Hammer Horror greatness. The classic movie monsters will always be my favorite films of childhood. To get this out in the open, I hate remakes and the idea that Universal was going to bring The Wolfman back to life filled me with dread. Once again, Hollywood would be taking wonderful past memories and stomping the life out of them. Not in this case and I am glad I was wrong.
The original Wolfman had fine performances from Lon Chaney Jr. and Bela Lugosi. Curt Siodmak's screenplay brought the Wolfman to life. Siodmak injected a several good ideas into his screenplay such as silver bullets. Past Universal Horror movies was based on great literature as in the cases of Frankenstein and Dracula. I applaud Siodmak for tackling a film without a novel to work from.
Then came Hammer who rejected the classic movie monsters with British blood and a lot gore, which was extreme for that time.
Now Universal comes full circle and updates all the gore, violence, and suspense that made the original so much fun.
Rick Baker's makeup is just fantastic and I was glad that CGI didn't ruin the new Wolfman. The CGI that was used was fine and I didn't really realize it until I saw the bear which I forgave the filmmakers for because a real bear would have up the costs and some actor would have probably lost a much needed limp.
Danny Elfman's score is haunting and builds up suspenseful scenes almost to the point of discomfort. I love the scenes where Lawrence Talbot is sneaking around his father's house and you hear a little uneasy music and then silence. Silence in Horror movies is the worst time because it is a lot like being at the top of a rollarcoaster, its just going to stop your heart once you get over the hump. Then the silence is invaded by Elfman's intense score. Also, seeing The Wolfman in a theater with a good loud sound system helps out a lot too.
The real star of The Wolfman is Benicio Del Toro who does a great job portraying Lawrence Talbot. Equally good is Sir Anthony Hopkins as Talbot's father and the always lovely Emily Blunt as Lawrence's love interest, and Hugo Weaving as Detective Francis Aberline. Weaving is great as the detective driven to save the village from werewolves and all the resulting deaths that werewolves accomplish during a rage.
I don't think any fan who grew up on the classic movie monsters will have any problems seeing The Wolfman. This movie gives Horror films a much needed revamp with Horror is at an all time low. This is the way to take a classic movie and update it with modern tricks. Director Joe Johnston does a great job with the material.
I hope the Universal with revamp Frankentein, Dracula, The Creature from the Black Lagoon, and the Invisible Man in a similar vein.
Other Werewolves movies that have gave me countless, wonderful sleepless nights are The Wolfman (1941), Werewolf of London (1935), Curse of the Werewolf (1961), The Howling (1981), The Company of Wolves (1984), Wolfen (1981), Frankenstein meets the Wolfman (1943), An American Werewolf in London (1981), Silver Bullet (1985), and Ginger Snaps (2000). There was also an execellent short live series on TV called Werewolf that aired on Fox in the 80's. Also a nod to Marvel's Werewolf by Night. Stephen King gave us Cycle of the Werewolf (1985, see Silver Bullet for the film based on the book.) And last but not least Warren Zevon singing Werewolves of London.
